The 2026 holiday shipping cutoffs, and why the last week costs three times as much in surcharges

Three details are easy to miss. UPS warns that some UPS 2nd Day Air packages tendered on December 14, 15, 16 or 21, and some 3 Day Select packages tendered on December 14 or 15, may need an extra day in transit. The UPS Service Guarantee is suspended except for select Air and International services. And UPS's 2027 rates take effect on December 21, inside the last-week window: UPS daily rates for Ground, Air and International rise an average net 5.9% that day, per UPS's rates page. Two dates come earlier than December. USPS's international send-by date is Wednesday, December 9 for First-Class Package International and Priority Mail International to every region it lists, and December 16 for Priority Mail Express International. For military mail, USPS lists Wednesday, November 4 for Ground Advantage to the APO/FPO/DPO AE ZIP ranges it shows, which is this week.

What that calendar did not show is what happens to the air and express surcharges in the same weeks, which is where the last-minute orders go.

What the marketplaces publish (and what they don't)

We looked for 2026 holiday dates on each marketplace's own pages on November 2. Where we found none, we say so rather than reuse last year's.

Why it matters: the last week is where the surcharge triples

Between November 22 and December 26, UPS charges $0.75 per Ground Residential or Ground Saver package and $2.50 per UPS Air package (Next Day Air, 2nd Day Air and 3 Day Select), per its August 26 demand surcharge schedule. Between November 23 and December 27, FedEx charges $0.80 per residential Ground or Home Delivery package, $2.35 on 2Day, 2Day AM and Express Saver, and $2.55 on overnight services, per FedEx's demand surcharge page (updated October 23, 2026, U.S. package table dated July 22). That makes the air surcharge 3.3 times the ground one at UPS and 2.9 times at FedEx, by our arithmetic.

USPS has no separate surcharge. It raises the price itself: temporary rates from October 4, 2026 to January 17, 2027 add $0.50 to a 0–3 lb retail Ground Advantage or Priority Mail parcel in zones 1–4, $0.75 to Ground Advantage and $1.00 to Priority Mail in zones 5–9, and $1.40 (zones 1–4) to $2.35 (zones 5–9) to a 0–3 lb Priority Mail Express parcel, per USPS's August 25 announcement. Hypothetical, before any base rate: on a $20 order, the $0.75 UPS ground surcharge is 3.75% of revenue. Ship the same order 2nd Day Air on December 22 and the $2.50 surcharge alone is 12.5%, before you pay the air rate it sits on. What to do this week

• Set a ground order-by date. Start from the carrier date, subtract your handling time, then a buffer. Hypothetical: a shop with 3 business days of handling that ships USPS Ground Advantage needs orders by Monday, December 14 to make the December 17 send-by date. If you ship UPS Ground, look up your longest lane in Calculate Time and Cost instead of guessing.
• Publish it where the buyer sees it: shop announcement, listing descriptions and the order confirmation. On Etsy, update processing times and add holiday days off to your processing schedule, because Etsy builds ship-by dates from those settings.
• Price the late window now. Decide whether December 18 to 23 orders get Priority Mail, Priority Mail Express or air at a buyer-paid upgrade, and set that price to cover the base rate plus the $2.35 to $2.55 UPS and FedEx air surcharges, or the USPS temporary increase.
• Ship the early dates. Military Ground Advantage to the AE ZIP ranges USPS lists is due Wednesday, November 4. International First-Class Package and Priority Mail International are due December 9.
• If you sell on eBay, check your carrier default. eBay's announcement, as reported, waives the FedEx Demand Surcharge on eligible eBay Labels through January 17, 2027, but not the UPS one.
