More than 100 trucks, four drivers sidelined in recent enforcement actions

Commercial vehicle enforcement actions in Saskatchewan, Canada, and Missouri recently resulted in more than 100 trucks being placed out of service. The enforcement actions found nearly 200 inspections as authorities targeted brake defects, unsafe equipment and moving violations.

In Saskatchewan, highway patrol officers placed 103 commercial vehicles out of service during Operation Air Brake, a 72-hour inspection initiative conducted Aug. 25-27, according to a news release.

Officers completed 294 commercial vehicle inspections at the Beverly Weigh Scale near Swift Current, with more than one-third of inspected vehicles placed out of service, according to the Saskatchewan government. Most violations involved brake components or improper brake adjustment.

Of the 103 vehicles placed out of service, 62 had brake component or brake adjustment defects. An out-of-service designation means the vehicle has a serious safety issue and cannot resume operating until required repairs have been completed.

Operation Air Brake was conducted as part of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s annual Brake Safety Week, a North American enforcement and education initiative focused on commercial motor vehicle brake systems.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division conducted the operation Sept. 1 along Interstate 70 in Cooper County, according to a Facebook post. Troopers stopped 38 commercial vehicles for moving violations such as speeding and subsequently conducted 38 vehicle inspections.

Inspectors discovered 94 violations, resulting in four drivers and three vehicles being placed out of service for serious violations. One of the more serious equipment violations involved a trailer whose brakes had been removed and brake hose clamped shut, according to the patrol.
