When Murray Winton was just 18, his golf clubs were stolen and he turned to eBay to purchase a replacement set. They arrived, he didn’t like them, so resold them on eBay and having made a profit an accidental business was born. He purchased more sets and to resell on eBay and started to make a bit of money.
Having set up GolfClubs4Cash with a partner, 17 years later the business has grown and has been trading on eBay since 2010 alongside now four retail shops in Edinburgh, Milton Keynes, Southampton and Warrington. eBay however has always remained core to the business with the simple proposition that the more inventory you have the more you can sell.
When Murray was approached by eBay and told that eBay Live was growing the opportunity to get involved was a no brainer – always happy to try new things, they’d already experimented with selling on TikTok in a rented studio but it wasn’t at a stage where it worked for them.
When eBay Live came calling, Murray says that it was now a much more appealing proposition plus they had support from eBay and a large following on their eBay account to leverage. GolfClubs4Cash view eBay Live as partly a marketing exercise and partly as a vehicle to sell through certain products.
They’ve been through a learning curve to discover what sells well on eBay Live and things like a 25 year old driver – harder for the customer to find – definitely sell better on Live than more easily available products.
GolfClubs4Cash at the BMW PGA Championship, Wentworth Murray told us that he was delighted to be asked by eBay to work alongside the eBay Live team at Wentworth, during the BMW PGA Championship. It’s an opportunity to let customers know they’re working with eBay and they would happily work with eBay again.
Early results show from their Wentworth eBay Live shows that customers have largely been to people online, but they say that it’s been generating good awareness and engaging with people at Wentworth has seen them downloaded the eBay app while there so good for eBay to show eBay live connected with golf in action.
Murray is most definitely happy to partner and support eBay again to work to grow eBay Live in the future. I think from business stance, eBay live is a very reliable source for generating cash – all things considered the business needs to generate cash so eBay Live is a really good vehicle to do that.
It’s also good to explore which of your products will sell well and in pretty much any business there will be a roster of products that will sell well on eBay Live.
– Murray Winton, Founder, GolfClubs4Cash The big takeaway is that GolfClubs4Cash have grown their eBay following by 10% in just three months of eBay Live shows, after having been in on eBay 16 years. And we all know that the bigger your business’s community on eBay the more sales you’ll ultimately generate whether through eBay Live of core eBay sales.
