Intermodal rail better by 10% in latest count

Intermodal rail volume rose 10.4% year-over-year for the week ending Oct. 10, 2026, with cumulative 2026 intermodal units up 4.4% through 40 weeks. High diesel prices and tighter trucking enforcement are driving freight toward rail.
Rail volume gains signal a tightening domestic freight market heading into peak season, adding margin pressure on top of existing fulfillment cost increases — sellers with thin margins on heavy or bulky SKUs are most exposed.
Trucking capacity is tightening, which typically pushes up FTL/LTL rates and extends lead times — sellers relying on domestic truckload moves for replenishment or 3PL transfers should expect cost pressure. Now is the time to negotiate carrier contracts or shift inbound freight to intermodal where lead times allow.
