Target Leans Further into Large-Format Store Expansion with May Openings
Executive Summary

Target is opening 30 new stores in 2026, with 5 of 6 May openings exceeding the standard 125,000 square feet as part of a $5 billion capital investment. Target stores fulfill 95% of digital orders, making physical expansion critical for omnichannel fulfillment.

Our Take

Larger Target stores mean expanded shelf space and potentially more local inventory, which could improve delivery speeds for Target sellers. Monitor your Target Connect performance metrics as new stores come online - faster fulfillment from these locations could boost your organic ranking.

What This Means

Target's physical expansion reinforces the omnichannel advantage against pure-play Amazon, as stores become fulfillment centers that enable same-day delivery at scale.

Key Takeaways

Check Target Connect analytics for fulfillment speed improvements in Arizona, Missouri, North Carolina, and New Jersey markets as new stores launch.

Full Coverage

Target will open six new stores next month, five of which will be larger than the retailer’s 125,000-square-foot average size, as it remains on track to open a total of 30 new stores this year.

The retailer already has opened five larger-format stores this spring — part of Target’s $5 billion capital investment for the year, which also includes remodeling more than 130 locations. The new stores opening in May will be located in: Buckeye, Ariz. (148,000 square feet); Casa Grande, Ariz. (127,000 square feet); St.

Louis (149,000 square feet); Jersey City, N. J. (119,000 square feet); Wilmington, N. C. (128,000 square feet); and Selma, N. C. (129,000 square feet).

“Our continued commitment to opening new stores is really about showing up for our guests and our communities — and it starts with our incredible store team members,” said Adrienne Costanzo, Chief Stores Officer at Target, who started her Target career 20 years ago at T-108 in Evansville, Ind. , in a statement.

“These new stores give our teams the tools and environments to bring our merchandising strengths to life, create easier and more inspiring shopping experiences, and use technology to move smarter and faster every day.” Target faces stiff competition from other value retailers, notably Walmart as well as players such as Dollar General.

Target noted that its ongoing store openings allow it to not only be closer to consumers who visit the stores, but also digital customers: Target’s stores currently fulfill 95% of digital orders, including same-day delivery with Target Circle 360, which currently reaches 80% of the U. S. population.

New store openings this year that have topped the Target 125,000-square-foot average size include stores in Bakersfield and Delano, Calif. ; Springfield, Mo. ; Fuquay Varina, N. C. ; and West Orange, N. J.
