AI Max in 2026-2027: What’s Working & What Bleeds Budget

Google's AI Max for Search campaigns (2026) expands query matching, rewrites ad copy, and redirects landing page traffic automatically. Advertisers with weak conversion signals or unstructured accounts are reporting wasted spend at scale.
AI-driven ad automation is pushing strategy complexity upstream, forcing sellers and agencies to invest more in account hygiene and signal quality rather than keyword management -- a structural shift in how paid search budgets are managed.
Sellers running Google Shopping or Search to drive off-Amazon traffic face amplified risk: AI Max will exploit any gaps in negative keywords, poor landing pages, or thin conversion data. Audit your Final URL Expansion setting and search term reports weekly -- if irrelevant queries are appearing, your inputs are the problem, not the automation.

By Harith Bashir - Tuesday October 20, 2026 Share (Twitter) WhatsApp Summarize ChatGPT Perplexity Grok Google AI After more than 10 years in digital marketing, I’ve watched paid search change quite a bit. First, it was all about keywords. Then came audiences, remarketing, demographics & more advanced targeting.
Now we’re moving toward something different: intent-driven search powered by AI. Above: A chart showing 20 year evolution of paid search. Source: Self-created from my AI Max Hero Conference SD 2026 Deck AI Max is a good example. Some advertisers are getting incremental growth & revenue.
Others are watching AI Max automation just expand their targeting onto unprofitable / irrelevant traffic they never intended to buy. The difference often comes down to something less hype-filled than the technology itself: how well the account’s being managed around it. AI Max (& search automation) simply moves the need for strategy up-funnel.
Advertisers have to adjust. What AI Max Actually Does AI Max’s definition is constantly evolving. In short it’s collection of AI-powered capabilities within Search campaigns. It can expand query matching, customize ad text, and expand where traffic lands.
The core capabilities include: Behavioral Query Matching to identify relevant searches beyond traditional keyword targeting Text Customization to adapt ad messaging Dynamic Asset Creation to expand creative coverage Final URL Expansion to send users to potentially more relevant landing pages The important shift is that AI Max looks beyond the keyword itself.
It uses signals around intent, creative assets, and landing pages to identify additional opportunities. That creates more potential for incremental growth – but the flipside of that is potential for wasted spend. What does AI Max really accomplish? AI Max Amplifies Your Account Think of AI Max as an amplifier – or a variable in a formula.
Held up against a strong account (better inputs), it produces better performance. A weak account structure results in more expensive mistakes.
The basic equation is simple: High-Quality Inputs × AI Max Automation = Scaled Performance OR Scaled Revenue If conversion data / signals are poor, your landing pages are weak, or account structure is overly complex, performance automation can’t solve those underlying issues. It’ll amplify them, though.
That’s why two advertisers can use the same AI Max features & produce very different results. The formula variables (the operating environment) are different. Account A may have clean conversion signals, focused campaigns, strong landing pages, and clear exclusions. Account B may fail all those criteria.
To improve performance, build an account structure that enhances AI Max’s usefulness. The AI Max Operating Framework Instead of flipping the AI Max switch on and standing back, use a six-stage framework: Above: A visual showing showing the AI Max Operating Framework as a mountain to be scaled.

Onboard Deliberately (Don’t Turn Everything On Just Because) The first mistake is treating every AI Max feature as mandatory.
Start with the settings that make sense for your account / industry. Start with the capabilities that make sense for the account. Search Term Matching & Text Customization can expand discovery and improve ad relevance. Final URL Expansion, though, requires more consideration.
Ecommerce accounts w/ large catalogs & strong category / product pages: URL expansion can create useful opportunities. Accounts w/ limited content or strict traffic requirements: It may drive to destinations you don’t want. The right setup depends on the account and its goals.
URL Expansion Pro tip: Ask, “What additional freedom can this account safely handle?” 2. Set Guardrails (AI Max Likes Freedom, But We’re On a Budget.) AI Max may want additional room to explore, but your test budget comes first.
There are 3 different zones / stages for AI Max to clear: (In order) The Expansion Zone: Where AI can discover new opportunities The Guardrail Zone: Where you define what is off limits The Profit Zone: Where proven traffic gets more investment Useful controls include: Brand exclusions URL inclusions and exclusions Geographic controls Clear campaign and conversion structures The four above guardrails are your greatest protections against uncontrolled / wasted spend.
3. Give The System Time to Learn (2-4 Weeks Learning Period) Optimization before enough test data is one of the easiest ways to ruin AI Max’s chances of success. Above: A chart showing the typical learning period for AI Max (Weeks 1-4). Source: Self-created from my AI Max Hero Conference SD 2026 Deck Th
Disable Final URL Expansion in Google Ads > Campaign Settings if your landing pages are limited or traffic requirements are strict -- AI Max will otherwise redirect paid clicks to unintended destinations.
In the next 30 days, clean conversion signals before enabling AI Max: verify tag firing, consolidate duplicate campaigns, and add negative keyword lists to prevent irrelevant query expansion.
