Full Coverage

News is out that IKEA are to join the world of recommerce with the launch of the IKEA marketplace in the UK, exclusively available to IKEA Family members, to sell items that they no longer require. IKEA Marketplace will be a peer-to-peer network for buying and selling used IKEA furniture locally, bypassing platforms like Facebook Marketplace or eBay.

It will be exclusive to IKEA Family members. Sellers can choose to receive cash or get an IKEA gift card with a 15% bonus added to the selling price. Initially, it will be free to use with no listing commission. However there will be a mandatory 5% Buyer Protection Fee paid by the buyer.

The IKEA Marketplace has been piloted in Spain and Norway and although no firm date for a UK launch has been announced, an indicator that this is coming very soon is the publication of their Marketplace Buyer Protection policy with an effective date of the 16th September 2026.

With the launch of IKEA second-hand marketplace in the UK, we’re taking a meaningful step toward creating a destination that simplifies access to pre-owned IKEA furniture. Our goal is to make passing on beloved IKEA pieces as seamless as possible.

We’re creating a trusted and vibrant space to make it quick and easy for our IKEA Family members to trade directly with one another. We want the process for buying and selling pre-owned IKEA products to be simple, accessible and rewarding.

– IKEA While it’s true to say that the IKEA Marketplace will be a competitor to the likes of eBay, Vinted and Gumtree, it’s probably more likely that it’s main competition will be Facebook Marketplace.

Consumers are ever more keen to turn unwanted items into cash and IKEA has a loyal following who will probably be only too happy to snap up some quality bargains.

IKEA Marketplace Overview Only genuine second-hand IKEA furniture and home furnishing accessories will be allowed on the IKEA Marketplace, but products that could safely or hygiene concerns such as KEA Food products, home appliances and mattresses will be prohibited.

A mandatory Buyer Protection fee of 5% of the Product purchase price and is automatically added to all purchases made on the IKEA Marketplace and is paid by the buyer. Collections and Postage options appear at the stage to be a bit ad hoc, even for returns arrangements have to be made directly between the buyer and the seller with no intermediation by IKEA.

In the event of a dispute, the buyer will need to submit a description of why they believe they are entitled to a refund along with photos of the Product (including packaging if applicable), that help justify the refund claim, if available.

Sellers can respond with their own photos to justify why they should keep their sale proceeds and then IKEA’s Buyer Protection provider Ingka NB AB will email their decision to the buyer and seller within 30 days.
