Stolen trailer investigation leads police to nearly $800K in cargo and vehicles

Update: Peel Regional Police provided FreightWaves with new details Aug. 11 about how suspects obtained both shipments. Peel Regional Police recovered nearly $800,000 in stolen computer equipment and commercial vehicles during their Brampton, Ontario investigation.

July 22, detectives went near Heart Lake Road, close to Countryside Drive, for a missing-trailer follow-up. The search led officers beyond that original case. Inside nearby trailers, they found cargo from two unrelated thefts. Investigators located four stolen commercial assets nearby. Two separate computer shipments carried an estimated value of $681,083.

68. Police connected those loads with incidents occurring July 17 and three days later. Both findings came from one follow-up effort in Brampton. Peel Regional Police later told FreightWaves that suspects posed as a legitimate transportation company. One victim hired this business to move two separate loads.

After completing another pickup, the customer discovered its carrier was fraudulent. Authorities determined the operation stole both shipments. Computer cargo came from separate thefts While examining recovered trailers, detectives discovered computer equipment. That vehicle inquiry did not originally involve either shipment.

Investigators believe stolen loads entered those units after each theft. The release describes one trailer investigation alongside two unrelated cargo incidents. Police identified recovered equipment only as computers. The release omitted manufacturer, owner, shipper and intended recipient names.

Officials provided no pickup locations, destinations, carrier identities, recovery timeline or shipment details. Authorities continue examining this matter. Four commercial vehicles add $105K Two Utility Manufacturing trailers, from 2016 and 2021, appeared among recovered assets.

One 2015 Volvo VNL tractor joined 1998 Stoughton equipment, completing four-vehicle list. Police calculated their combined value at roughly $105,000. Together, those items brought the official total to $786,083. 68. Peel Regional Police have not identified any suspects connected with these incidents.

The Commercial Auto Crime Bureau continues handling the investigation. Detectives are examining whether the cargo thefts and recovered vehicles share a connection. Police called it “too early” to determine whether the same individuals or group participated. Authorities asked anyone with information to call 905-453-2121, extension 3313.
