Executive Summary

Apple announced John Ternus will replace Tim Cook as CEO on September 1, 2026, with Cook becoming executive chairman. Ternus has led hardware engineering for Apple's product development since 2001.

Our Take

Apple's hardware-focused CEO transition signals continued emphasis on physical products over services, potentially affecting future device launches and ecosystem integration that drives accessory sales. Apple Inc. announced that Tim Cook will leave the CEO role at the Cupertino, California-based iPhone and MacBook maker in 2026, making way for John Ternus, senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, to take his place. The transition, which Apple’s board of directors approved, will be effective as of Sept. 1. Apple is No. 3 in the Top 2000.

Cook will become executive chairman of Apple’s board of directors as Ternus joins the board. “John Ternus has the mind of an engineer, the soul of an innovator, and the heart to lead with integrity and with honor,” Cook said in a released statement.

“He is a visionary whose contributions to Apple over 25 years are already too numerous to count, and he is without question the right person to lead Apple into the future.” Ternus arrived at Apple in 2001 to work on its product design team. Then, in 2013, Apple elevated him to become a vice president of hardware engineering.

In 2021, Apple named him as senior vice president of hardware engineering. As Ternus prepares to become CEO, oversight of hardware engineering will pass to Johny Srouji, who has most recently served as senior vice president of hardware technologies. Apple named Srouji as its new chief hardware officer in a separate announcement on April 20.

Cook’s final months as Apple CEO “Tim’s unprecedented and outstanding leadership has transformed Apple into the world’s best company,” said Arthur Levinson, non-executive chairman at Apple. “He’s introduced groundbreaking products and services time and again, and his integrity and values are infused into everything Apple does.”

Levinson is slated to become Apple’s lead independent director on Sept. 1 as Ternus joins the board. “On behalf of the entire board of directors, we are incredibly grateful for his countless contributions to Apple and the world, and we are thrilled [Cook] will now be executive chairman,” Levinson added.

“We believe John is the best possible leader to succeed Tim and as he transitions to CEO we know his love of Apple, his leadership, deep technical knowledge, and relentless focus on creating great products will help lead Apple to an extraordinary future.”

Early on, both Cook and Ternus worked at Apple under Steve Jobs, Apple’s co-founder and former CEO, who passed away in 2011. “Having spent almost my entire career at Apple, I have been lucky to have worked under Steve Jobs and to have had Tim Cook as my mentor,” Ternus noted. Cook has worked at Apple since 1998.

During his time there, which included his rise to become CEO in 2011, Apple debuted the Apple Watch, AirPods and Apple Vision Pro. It also debuted services such as iCloud, Apple Pay, Apple TV and Apple Music. Apple credited Cook for leading the company as its market capitalization grew from $350 billion to $4 trillion.
