Shopify changes its integration approach with ChatGPT

Shopify pivoted its ChatGPT integration in March 2026: instead of native in-chat checkout, buyers now discover products via Shopify's Global Catalog inside ChatGPT and complete purchases on the merchant's own store. The 'Agentic Storefronts' channel launches by default for all Shopify merchants later in March.
This is the first major AI-native discovery channel that auto-enrolls merchants — meaning your product listings, pricing, and inventory accuracy in Shopify admin directly determine whether you show up (and how) in ChatGPT shopping results. Agencies managing Shopify brands should audit catalog feed completeness now, since sloppy PDPs will suppress visibility before the channel even launches.
AI-driven discovery is forcing platform consolidation at the checkout layer — the brands with the cleanest catalog data will win distribution in agentic commerce before competitors realize the channel exists.
Go to Shopify Admin > Sales Channels and check Agentic Storefronts settings when it appears — opt-out or configure before it goes live by default to avoid unintended pricing/inventory exposure.
Audit your Shopify product catalog within the next 30 days: accurate real-time pricing, inventory, and complete PDP content are the ranking signals for ChatGPT discovery.

Ecommerce technology provider Shopify and OpenAI’s ChatGPT are preparing changes to their integration plans after an initial announcement in September 2025. In September, ChatGPT began rolling out a payment experience it called “Instant Checkout.” The launch started with Etsy sellers, using the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP).
That launch with Etsy followed news from January 2025 that the online marketplace would be one of the first to use OpenAI’s Operator agent. Instacart and eBay were also among those companies. However, OpenAI did not mention them in its Instant Checkout announcement.
OpenAI refers to the ACP as an open standard that enables a conversation between buyers, their AI agents and businesses to complete purchases. Currently, 118 of the Top 2000 online retailers in North America use Shopify as their ecommerce platform, according to Digital Commerce 360 data.
In 2025, the combined web sales of all Top 2000 retailers that used Shopify’s ecommerce platform reached $10. 458 billion. The Top 2000 Database ranks North America’s largest online retailers based on their annual ecommerce sales and more.

Checkout flows outline the steps customers take when making purchases from Shopify-powered websites. “Shopify merchants will be able to sell directly through ChatGPT conversations — no links or redirects, just seamless commerce,” Shopify had posted to its website’s news section in September 2025.
However, new details communicated in March by OpenAI about its agentic checkout plans made it appear that circumstances were changing. “Shopify puts your products front and center, with real-time pricing and inventory. So you show up in ChatGPT right where buyers are ready to spend,” according to a page describing the integration.

“Buyers can find your products and complete purchases inside ChatGPT,” the email said. “This agentic storefront channel will launch by default for your store, and you will be able to modify settings in your Admin.” It then linked to an updated “Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms of Service.”
News OpenAI shifts checkout plans in its agentic commerce strategy Brian Warmoth | Mar 6, 2026 How will the updated Shopify integration with ChatGPT work? Shopify confirmed some details of the new experience with Digital Commerce 360.
“In the new experience, buyers will discover Shopify merchants’ products in ChatGPT (surfaced via Shopify’s Global Catalog) and complete their purchase on the merchant’s own online store — in an in app browser in the ChatGPT mobile app, or in a separate browser tab on web,” a Shopify representative told Digital Commerce 360 via email.
On its website, Shopify describes the Shopify Catalog as a way to search for products across merchants. The site says “select partners building apps and AI agents” can access the catalog. They can search and surface real-time product information “in popular AI platforms and shopping destinations.” That includes pricing, options and availability.
The Shopify representative told Digital Commerce 360 that ChatGPT-orchestrated transactions will still run through the merchant’s checkout page. Orders will appear in the Shopify merchant’s admin platform “like any other sales channel.”
It added that merchants “keep their store at the center,” controlling the experience from product detail pages (PDPs) to checkout. “Shopify merchants do not need to build apps for ChatGPT to participate in commerce,” Shopify told Digital Commerce 360.
“Shopify’s Agentic Storefronts syndicates their data to ChatGPT through the Shopify Catalog, and their products will be shown in response to user queries and chats. Also, no app installation is necessary by the merchant in Shopify’s admin to make this work, it comes out of the box with Agentic Storefronts.
