6 arrested as UK police target cargo theft costing $88M a year

Police arrested six people in Leeds, United Kingdom, on Tuesday during a national cargo theft investigation. Officers targeted addresses across the Belle Isle and Kirkstall areas. The inquiry concerns a large stock consignment taken from a heavy goods vehicle. Investigators also recovered suspected stolen merchandise, controlled drugs and several weapons.

The Yorkshire and Humber Regional Organized Crime Unit led the morning raids. Five men and one woman face questioning, according to West Yorkshire Police. Their ages range from 27 to 56. Authorities detained everyone on suspicion of theft from a motor vehicle.

Police recover weapons and suspected stolen goods Search teams executed warrants at six locations across the city. They found merchandise that investigators believe may have come from previous crimes. Authorities also seized controlled substances and a variety of weapons. Those items included a stun gun prohibited under firearms legislation.

The Regional Intelligence Unit directed the investigation. YHROCU recently increased staffing within that team. Detective Superintendent Al Burns described the change as “a more front foot approach.” He credited those resources with turning live intelligence into timely operations.

Burns serves as the national regional unit lead for serious organized acquisitive crime. He identified this offense category as a key focus. Tuesday’s raids represent the latest action under that strategy. Investigators plan similar operations during the coming weeks and months.

Cargo theft costs reached £65 million Burns called organized theft from heavy goods vehicles “a significant issue nationally.” Authorities recorded an average of nine offenses each day last year. Those crimes generated total costs reaching £65 million. The figure equals roughly $88 million at current exchange rates.

The financial damage extends beyond missing products. Burns cited driver trauma, vehicle repairs, replacement transportation and delayed deliveries. Insurance expenses add further pressure across affected businesses. Supply chain disruption can also raise prices for customers. Police have not identified the stolen stock or disclosed its value.

Authorities also withheld details about when and where thieves targeted the vehicle. The announcement did not name anyone detained during Tuesday’s operation.
