It’s only been two minutes since eBay announced they had completed its acquisition of Depop, and now when you visit eBay Fashion on eBay. com the first thing you’re greeted by is a massive banner ad introducing you to the C2C fashion marketplace.
At the time of the acquisition, we said that we’d be be watching out for is any cross selling from eBay to Depop and vice versa. It would be too soon to see any massive integrations exposing eBay listings to Depop buyers or vice versa, but it’s good to see that eBay aren’t wasting any time in starting some cross pollination between the two marketplaces.
With both eBay and Depop delivered very strong growth in Q2, suggesting that Depop’s momentum was incremental to ours and the addressable market is expanding.
So we’re really focused on using these complementary value propositions to unlock substantially more consumer supply and capture more of the significant untapped market opportunity in C2C and in recommerce.
– Jamie Iannone, CEO, eBay Depop, whilst highly complementary to eBay’s existing fashion business, is interesting in the US because the fee model is totally different.
Unlike in the UK and some other markets, on eBay UK selling is free for private sellers with a buyer fee which similar to how Depop operates, but in the US private sellers still pay selling fees.
That’s got be either annoy a few avid eBay sellers or perhaps convince them that if eBay are going to advertise Depop so prominently that maybe selling on there is something worth exploring.
