Full Coverage
Ahead of a major summer of sport, Amazon has launched a new initiative where purchases of selected sport products will trigger a donation to The Multibank. For every three eligible items purchased – including footballs, shinpads and kit – an equivalent item will be donated to help ensure more young people have access to sport.
The campaign aims to raise awareness of the importance of access to sport, particularly for young people who may otherwise be unable to participate, while encouraging customers to support donations through everyday purchases.
The Multibank, supported by principal partner Amazon, distributes surplus goods to families in need through a nationwide network of charities and community organisations. Alongside everyday essentials such as toiletries, nappies and household items, some of the most commonly requested items include items like football boots, sports kit, and toys.
The campaign comes as new data reveals the cost of sports kit and equipment is a barrier to access and opportunity for young people across the UK. New YouGov data reveals: 1 in 6 parents (15%) say their children have had to give up their sporting ambitions as they can’t afford the kit or equipment to take part.
3 in 4 parents (72%) of children aged 4-18 believe a lack of access to sports equipment leads to fewer opportunities for those from lower-income families.
2 in 5 parents (40%) with gross household income of under £30,000, whose child(ren) quit sports or had to give up a sporting ambition, cited football as the activity they had to give up because they could no longer afford the kit or equipment.
Football gave me so much growing up, and I’ve seen first-hand the role it can play in young people’s lives – not just physically, but for confidence, belonging and mental wellbeing. Over the years, I’ve worked with so many players whose journeys started in difficult circumstances. Talent is everywhere, but opportunity isn’t always.
That’s why I am supporting The Multibank, and its work with Amazon to ensure essential items are available to those in need, helping give more young people the chance to take part and feel included in sport.
