New DoorDash Partnership Adds 1,000+ Canadian Supermarkets to Delivery Network
Executive Summary

DoorDash partnered with Empire Company to add 1,000+ Canadian supermarkets for delivery, now covering 4 of Canada's 5 largest grocery chains. Partnership includes major banners like Sobeys, Safeway, and IGA with 30% off promotion through May 3, 2026.

Our Take

DoorDash's grocery expansion signals accelerated quick commerce competition that could pressure Amazon Fresh and Walmart+ delivery times in Canada. Brands selling consumables should evaluate DoorDash advertising opportunities as the platform shifts from restaurant-only to full retail marketplace.

What This Means

Quick commerce platforms are evolving into full retail marketplaces, creating new customer acquisition channels while intensifying last-mile delivery competition with traditional ecommerce giants.

Key Takeaways

Monitor DoorDash DashPass advertising options if you sell CPG products - quick commerce platforms are becoming viable alternatives to traditional grocery retail channels.

Review your Canadian fulfillment strategy for consumables - sub-60 minute delivery is becoming the new standard in major cities.

Full Coverage

DoorDash has partnered with Empire Company Ltd. to bring Empire’s family of 12 supermarket banners into its network, adding on-demand delivery from more than 1,000 stores across 10 Canadian provinces. The addition of Empire means that DoorDash now partners with four of the five largest grocery companies in Canada, based on reported sales figures.

The expansion encompasses Empire brands including Sobeys, Safeway, IGA, FreshCo, Farm Boy and Longo’s as well as convenience options including Needs, Boni-Soir and Voisin. Consumers can access nearly 10,000 items on DoorDash on average per store, including fresh produce, household essentials and pharmacy items.

Grocery orders are delivered via DoorDash in under 60 minutes, on average, in Canada’s five largest cities.

“As Canadians increasingly face time pressure, DoorDash is proud to help give some time back through on-demand grocery delivery — whether it’s a full weekly shop or just for tonight’s dinner,” said Mike Goldblatt, VP of Enterprise Business Development and Partnerships in a statement. “Together, we’re making everyday shopping more convenient and accessible.”

To mark the new partnership, DoorDash is collaborating with Sylvia Nguyen, the creator behind Nguyen Food Stall, who has curated three practical weeknight recipes designed to help Canadian consumers shop smarter.

Each recipe can be prepared in less than an hour and uses overlapping ingredients across dishes, to help stretch shopping dollars and simplify meal planning. Additionally, through May 3, 2026, consumers can receive 30% off one order from their favorite Empire banner by using a promo code at checkout.

DoorDash has been expanding well beyond food delivery in recent months: in November 2025 DoorDash partnered with Old Navy, Family Dollar and 1-800-Flowers for delivery from their stores, following the platform’s August 2025 partnership with Ace Pickleball Club.
