Shaun O’Brien Direct Plants – Growing a business over two decades

Direct Plants grew from selling one plant on eBay in 2006 to operating 30 polytunnels across five acres by 2026, expanding beyond eBay to multiple marketplaces. The Norfolk-based plant seller won eBay's Specialist Seller Award in 2019 and continues expanding operations.
Multi-channel expansion over 20 years shows the importance of diversifying beyond single platforms while maintaining strong performance on original channels. Plant sellers face unique inventory challenges with 12-month lead times requiring advanced demand forecasting.
Demonstrates how specialized sellers can scale significantly by mastering one platform first, then expanding methodically to additional marketplaces while solving category-specific operational challenges.
Diversify marketplace presence gradually while maintaining excellence on your strongest performing platform first.
For seasonal/agricultural products, implement inventory planning systems that can forecast demand 12+ months ahead.

Full Coverage
From seeing an advert for eBay in 2006 and starting their online venture by selling a single place, Direct Plants has grown massively over the past two decades. In 2019 they won The Specialist Seller eBay for Business Award and so it’s somewhat fitting that in their 20th year I made the trip to Norfolk to see how their operations have grown.
They still have their original 2 Poly Tunnels from when the business started, but today they have 30 spread over five acres and the business is still expanding – I spotted a couple of new Poly Tunnels that have just started to be erected.
Today they’ve expanded beyond just eBay and Shaun tells me that eBay as the OG still holds a special place in the business, but they’ve naturally adopted many more marketplaces as new channels have emerged.
